Poverty
Poverty is a huge problem; especially now when we’re in a global pandemic. Many people have lost their jobs, and are now living in horrible conditions. About 150 million people have gone to extreme poverty (living on less than $1.90) just because of the pandemic. Some people don’t have shelter, are being paid in minimum wage, and lack of education. I feel that raising the minimum wage would help eliminate the monster we call poverty.
Firstly is shelter, a fundamental thing that everyone needs. It provides essential needs to us, such as protection from, wind, rain, snow, and hot or cold temperatures. Two out of five households don’t have enough or the savings to go through financial troubles. According to the World Health Organization, a child under 15 dies every five seconds around the world. Mostly by preventable causes that poverty initiates. Affordable housing can be very hard to find, it’s very expensive to find a nice living space for an affordable price.
Secondly, lack of education. Education is yet another fundamental thing we need. It builds the foundation of learning, for example, how to do math and write. Most people in poverty don’t have the money to go to school, therefore lacking basic education. Education is important because it opens opportunity, not only to new jobs, but to skills a family needs to live. According to UNESCO if all students in low income countries had basic reading skills, about 171 million people could escape extreme poverty.
Finally, I feel as if raising the minimum wage would help eliminate poverty because it increases the income of the low-paid, reduces income inequality and reduces labor turnover. It would also help boost the economy greatly by making increased consumer demand.
As you can see, poverty is truly a monster. It tears families apart, and makes people live in treacherous conditions. Such as a dragon would in a fairytale. Therefore, we should do all we can to finally stop it. Or should I say, slay it.
